Heart-Breaking News! Hughes Two Ofners Lose 13-1

September 27, 2006 at 2:27 pm (Ancient History from my Xanga) (, , )

Yes friends, the headline is true.  We lost our first soccer match 13-1.  The 13 being their score and the 1 being ours.  Their score being higher meant they won the game – thats how soccer works.  However, this fails to factor in the score that should be awarded for team spirit and floor-bonding!

Above, our team practise on Sunday, the day before the big game.  Basically, we kicked the ball around and had a good time.  Little did we know, that a mere 24 hours later, we’d be having the fight of our lives!

Our fellow floormates cheer us on as we fight for our lives.  While we may not win anything, we have more spirit than other floor on campus!

Above: Note the uniforms!  Colin and I stayed up until 2am ironing on the numbers, logo (pictured below) and labels (The Ofners).  There was controversy because two team members wanted the number 17.  A guy and a girl both wanted the number.  But this was soon resolved when the male finally just demanded the number and the girl gave in.  Chivalry in action – yahoo!

The Ofner Family Crest & our soccer team logo – can you tell that it was my idea for a logo?

More about the uniforms… Colin and I ironing until late into the night…

This last one… hmm… this last one… I didn’t actually lick the iron… my tongue is fine.

In other news!!!  The 2nd floor did win something:  My short film Le Flu, a 1min Lumiere film won “first place” at our visual literacy class today.  After viewing all 20+ films, the professor asked which films the class would nominate to win our “film festival”  At which point Le Flu was nominated and seconded twice!

At least I can know that while I can’t play soccer, I can make films.  At least 1min lumiere films with no audio.

First Game of the Season – Tonight!

September 25, 2006 at 2:29 pm (Ancient History from my Xanga) (, )

Well friends, tonight is the Hughes Two Ofner’s first game of the season.  In the even that I haven’t mentioned them to you before, let me explain.

You see Colin has a passion for Soccer.  This passion translates into him wanting to start an intramural team here at AU featuring none other than his floor mates, the residents of Hughes 2.

To prepare for this game, Colin has been having weekend practises on our quad.  Our first practise was very messy because it was raining and we got mud everywhere, however, it was dramatic and the mist added to the drama/trauma of the sport.  Additionally, the four of us pictured above have been going to that most formidable of places, the gym.  We use the cycles and treadmills.  I’ve actually really started to enjoy going to the gym and thus will post a goofy picture accordingly, because thats what I do.

Almost everyone I mentioned in my last post, as well as many others from the floor are on the team.  We call ourselves the Ofners after our RA, Halley Ofner!  We felt it was only right to thank our suburb RA with our soccer team.  Few other RAs have soccer teams named after them!  Halley also works at the Talon, AU’s yearbook and as a result, we’re having a AU photographer come to our first game – which is TONIGHT!

So TONIGHT is GAME 1 of 4.  I hear they’re going to be hard, however, I’m sure we will all try our best.  To be honest, I’m kinda scared.  Terrified to be exact.  Well, actually, not that bad, but I am deeply concerned.  But hopefully I’ll have fun once I get into it.

In the meantime, I’m sitting down with Wooden Boat Magazine, and relaxing before the big game, hopefully, no one will find out I’m scared (and haven’t had carbs for a while).

College Situation Update for Fall 2006

September 8, 2006 at 4:10 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , )

College Situation Update!!

Well friends! My health is failing! About mid-day on Sunday, while I was working Facility staff, I gradually contracted a rather severe sore throat. This has since morphed into dizziness, fatigue, and most recently, a runny nose. I have two bottles of rubbing alcohol in my dorm room for cleaning all the door knobs, handles, and I also bought a bottle of hand sanitizer. The good thing is that I’m not alone. This disease has been sweeping the floor, and Colin and I are merely its latest victims.

But alas, I may be getting ahead of myself. Let me introduce to you my dear friends and floormates that I’ve gotten to know so far this year on Hughes Two. Hughes Two this year is made up of 52 students mostly in double rooms, however, we have 4 Triples, counting me, the permanent triple. I have chosen a selective group of my closest companions to introduce to you, my varied (and hopefully numerous) readers. For starters, here is Colin!

Photo 16

Above: Colin is a jovial chap who shares many of my views on the world, whether political, or philosophical he has been a joy to get to know. He is one of the foremost champions of the T, which gives me no lack of joy (I love the T). Colin is also our intramural soccer coach. He is heading up our team and has done a splendid job organizing the complex array of schedules and forms that are needed to enter the league. His passion for soccer, and humility in teach us uneducated beginners, comes through in the joyful faces that can be seen on all the players at every moment (during the one practise we had). I’m sure you’ll hear much more about Colin before the year is over, but for now, content yourself with the knowledge that he is a faithful friend, and a good leader.

This brings us to Josh!

P1010032

Above: Josh is a great guy. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know him, and hearing his perspectives on everything from marriage, and religion to Macs and Microsoft. It is Josh who wants to be a judge someday, and it was Josh who notoriously mis-stated that, “he wanted to legislate from the bench one day…” The group that heard him say this burst into laughter (as only politically inclined AU students would) and have frequently laughed with Josh had his verbal blunder. Josh also contracted a virus on my computer, but thanks to his super-duper computer tech skills fixed it before anything could happen. He also got my wireless Internet up and working. Thanks Josh!

Now its time for Jeff

Above: Jeff is both a movie star, and a Japanese model! You can see the back of Jeff’s vibrantly red hair in the trailer for The Grudge 2 – it’s about 2/3rds of the way though, and its in a classroom – look for it. As for his illustrious modeling career, I know very little, and have no pictures to support this, but evidently, in Japan (where he used to be living with his family before coming to AU, they’re in the military) it is very easy to become a star due to the fact that anglo-saxon males are in high demand. Or so I’m told. Jeff is a very speedy person, and moves faster than I can think. Maybe I’m just slow, but right when I’m thinking about starting something, he’s already finished it – and 12 other things. He is also a riot, his jokes are frequently the life of the party – or he is, or however that goes. He’s funny.

Now, on to…er… uh… Stephen!

CIMG0040

Above, Left: In what is a strange angle on Stephen, we see both stephen and I in a momentary lull in our hostilities. There is nowhere on campus a relationship quite as – well – unique as the one Stephen and I have been building. Based on a sincere appreciation for one another, this compassionate foundation quickly amounts to joking and jesting of a most severe and hilarious variety. They say we act like brothers, in which case I treat him like a younger brother, and vice versa. The jesting and jabbing is thoroughly enjoyed by us, even if Colin, who plays a fatherly figure, always attempts to bring peace. Stephen is also a great athlete, and runs large distances, frequently, his goal is the run the 26mile Boston Marathon.

Since we’re on the subject, let me introduce Liz!

Above: Liz is pictured at left with an unknown friend (as in I don’t know her, I’m sure Liz does, or I hope she does, you should randomly go up to fellow ice skaters and take pictures with them!). Liz is the mother of the floor. She sweetly cares for all the sick, tired, or needy. She opens her room and her resources (cooking skills) to public use. There have been many times when nameless floormates have fallen asleep drunk on her floor and she kindly accepts them and watches over them throughout the night – much like a mother hen, or a nun of some kind.

Speaking of nuns, its time for Thais!

Actually, this has nothing to do with nuns but above right: Thais (Tie-ese) is a literature Major for Los Angeles California, and acts like it. She is always seeking the deeper inner meaning of a story, and the poignant words of her first creative writing paper were tear-inducing. Here she is with Stephen (see above) and other floor mates lurking in the murky background while out celebrating Josh’s (see above) 18th birthday at the Hard Rock Cafe. She is looking amazingly radiant considering who she is with. Thais sweet caring personality is a joy to be around, and she really does uplift the quality of the floor.

Now its time for the two Justins!

Above and below are both Justins, the one above is Justin B. who has joined or Intramural soccer team started by Colin (see above). Not only is he a really cool guy, but he’s very athletic. While initially he may seem reserved and/or mellow, once you get to know him, you’ll find a vibrant personality that is modest about his athletic accomplishments. I like to say he is our star player on our team, for two reasons, 1) he is the best player we’ve got (except maybe Colin, but we call him “coach” after the low-class tickets on the airlines… er… I mean the managerial position he has on our team!) and 2) because he demonstrates the kind of humility that the rest of the team, and the league, should emulate. Thats my perspective for now.

Below, and two the Left is Justin M. My new roommate. He is super awesome because, well, he’s a a playful soul like myself. I can strongly appreciate my own kind. He loves to have fun and kids around frequently, however, he doesn’t make himself the center of attention. His contributions are entirely fitting to the occasion, and its exactly that kind of comedic sense that I appreciate about him. Also pictured below is his girlfriend, and Hughes 2 resident, Kim, and her roommate Allison, whom you remember from last year. (you may not remember, but say you do if you leave comments)

And thats it for this issue of floor introductions. Look forward to many happy tales of my adventures with these wonderful friends.

EDIT: since writing the opening lines, my cold/fever has gotten much worse, and then bounced back (with a full night’s sleep) to almost normal.

Thanks for reading!
