The numbers for July Are way down, this is largely due to Kristin’s wedding, and other factors which limited communication on a whole. As you can see my the decline of the totals, communication is down across the board.

To everyone’s surprise, Tage took the lead this month for minutes with a modest increase, however sadly, Colin’s dramatic decline was large, even relative to the overall decline in cellphone usage. Colin came in a healthy 2nd. You may notice the addition of a new person on the chart, and that is Justin Broubalow. People are added to the system when they have logged a consistently sizable portion of cellphone usage. In this case, Justin had a significant number of text messages, which are recorded on this chart, primarily because of a lengthy text message conversation regarding the biblical perspective on dating. However, Justin didn’t log any minutes, and is recorded as such on the graph.

I witnessed a strange thing on the metro today.

As I was stepping off the train, I was walking to come up out of the platform and I passed this guy who got his brown paper wholefoods lunch bag caught in the closing metro doors. He was tugging at it and tugging at it, until the bag ripped to shreds spilling the contents all over inside of the train with him standing on the outside. Except for a Banana which was squeezed in half my the doors. The train started forward but then stopped and sounded all these alarms because a door wouldn’t close completely.

The guy walked off with half a ripped up bag and half and banana.

When I told Tage about this his response was “oh, poor guy”.

That’s a good reaction, my reaction was “what a stupid idiot to rush at the train doors so hurriedly as to get his bag caught. He had plenty of warning, but no, he had to rush, and now hundreds of people are going to be delayed because metro has to certify that the doors are closing correctly. What a Jerk”

I was serious angry at him. which is completely wrong!

Oh, so many opportunities to see sin.

Here are the released numbers from the Commission on Phone Usage (CPU) for the month of June.

Total Minutes used, and total texts sent are both in rapid decline reflecting the trend of the US economy. Economic Cutbacks at home, and abroad, as well as lack of the important Senate work or much of any college-friend contact (apart from Tage, Colin, and Josh) are clearly reflected in the numbers. From this data it is clear that summers seem to be a time of separation, and recovery from the school year, and that not much extra-curricular college work gets done during the summer months, at least not via the cell phone.

This numbers also illustrate the growing trend in the use of other forms of communication, such as gchat, and Skype, which allows users to talk freely without the use of cellphones. While Skype hasn’t been used except for once as of the time of this report, gChat remains a vital communication method between Jason, and his friends both at home, and at work.

Total Minutes Used in June

Total Texts Sent

As far as individual users are concerned, there are dramatic and remarkable changes in the level of communication between Jason and the various college friends selected in the sample. Nick Troiano has declined dramatically, while Colin Meiselman has risen dramatically, even surpassing the minute category leader by a significant margin. The Leading causes for these two changes are 1) Troiano’s decision to transfer to Georgetown, leaving them with very little to talk about. 2) Colin becoming General Manager of ATV, and Jason becoming Programming Manager giving them lots to talk about (in addition to the usual issues of the heart which are often discussed.)

Across the board both minutes and texts have declined, particularly among particular parties. Gchat remains a primary cause. Kristin’s wedding also is a factor, as mom has instructed the Cunninghams to save minutes for wedding party use, which was generally agreed to.

Minute Use by User

Texts Sent by User

I would anticipate even greater declines for next month (July) followed by dramatic gains and shifts as the new school year begins in August and September. August has the potential to demonstrate the serious decline typical of the summer months, but similar to the March decline, it will again be influenced by the family vacation to Lake George for one week August 2nd – 9th which will put Jason out of cellphone contact with the world.

Chairman
The Commission on Phone Usage

Newsweek – July 15, 2008

One of Five annual Royal Garden Parties

The lawn was a perfect emerald green, the roses were in lush bloom and the palace – well, it is Buckingham Palace, and as I trooped through the entrance galleries last week, it looked polished and elegant. But these are not the best of times for the Windsors: Queen Elizabeth II is reportedly short on cash to redecorate the Palace’s State Rooms, which haven’t been spruced up since the Queen took the throne in 1952. Plus, there isn’t even enough money (about $65 million) to carry out less glamorous projects, like asbestos removal, rewiring and roof repair. It seems that Her Majesty, like all the rest of us, is feeling the financial pinch–despite a net worth estimated at $650 million.

But you wouldn’t know it from the Queen’s first garden party of the summer season (three more will follow). My invitation came through a handful doled out to the Association of American Correspondents in London but most of the 8,000 attendees were loyal subjects who were clearly thrilled at the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the Queen in person rather than on a stamp or a pound bill.

The doors opened more than an hour before the Queen and her husband, Prince Philip, were scheduled to appear and chat with the crowd–plenty of time for the partygoers to explore gardens that are usually closed to the public. But as the time for the royal appearance drew closer, a kind of invisible magnet drew everyone to the center lawn where we obediently formed two corridors to let the royal couple chat earnestly with pre-selected guests. It looked like hard work for the 82-year-old monarch and her 87-year-old husband and it probably was – although they both have had decades of practice. At each conversation stop, the Queen appeared genuinely interested in what her guests had to say. Then, she hit the royal tea tent where instead of a quick cuppa, there were more guests to chat up.

This is just a small portion of the activity that the royal family claims cost British taxpayers about $80 million in the fiscal year that ended in March 2008 –or, as the royal bookkeepers helpfully explained on the Queen’s website, about $1.25 a person, “less than the price of two pints of milk or a download to an iPod.” (The price of an iTunes download in the United Kingdom is $1.38.) Sir Alan Reid, whose official title is Keeper of the Privy Purse, assured the public that the Queen’s financial advisers pay “continuous attention to obtaining value for money.” And he argued that trying to cut royal corners now would mean much bigger expenses in years to come if maintenance is deferred even longer.

Nonetheless, spending commoners’ cash on the royals continues to be controversial. When the most recent numbers were released late last month, an anti-monarchist group called Republic claimed that the real cost was nearly triple the official estimate. Supporters of the monarchy contend that the royals justify their tab because they bring in tourists. But Republic noted that only one royal residence, Windsor Castle, is among the United Kingdom’s top 20 tourist attractions. And it’s only 17th on the list, beaten handily by nearby Legoland (number 7).

The newest royal accounting did prove one thing: there’s no such thing as travel on the cheap in this family. When the Queen flew to the U.S. to mark the 400th anniversary of the Jamestown settlement, the cost of the chartered aircraft alone was more than $760,000, according to the palace. Taxpayers also picked up the $560,000 tab for an official two-week visit to the Caribbean by Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla – including $420,000 for a 12-day yacht charter.

That may sound impossibly luxe to most of us, but the monarchy isn’t what it used to be. Even with her illustrious ancestry, the Queen’s coffers pale compared to more modern royalty, like Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling, whose net worth, according to The Sunday Times of London, is estimated at about $1.1 billion. Rowling, of course, didn’t earn that money from the tax rolls. And that’s what continues to rankle the Queen’s critics. Why should ordinary Brits, themselves struggling with rising household costs, have to foot the bill for the Queen?

In a press conference accompanying the release of the budget, Sir Alan claimed that the cost of maintaining the monarchy has not gone up as much as many other expenses. Overall, the total was 5.3 percent higher than the previous year although some expenses soared. The cost of food at Buckingham Palace, for example, was up 20 percent–to $1 million.

All of which made me feel more than a little guilty as I scarfed down the particularly delicious cucumber finger sandwiches and petit fours in the tea tent at the garden party. My mind wandered to thoughts of Nepal, where the parliament recently voted almost unanimously to get rid of its monarchy. It’s unlikely that the current British monarch will face that fate. Even many of those who want to abolish her privileged position acknowledge that she has worked hard in the job (Charles will have a tough act to follow). And here’s another tip for monarchs who want to keep their thrones: get Helen Mirren to play you in a sympathetic, Oscar-winning role. As I watched the real Queen chatting with her rapt subjects, I heard more than one partygoer comment that she seemed so much tinier than in the movie. True–but still somehow larger than life.

As you may know, I’ve tried several times to get in shape. Each one usually dies and whithers away after a brief period of time. However, this summer has been a surprising one on the fitness front!

I’ve actually started going to the AU gym after work at WAMU 88.5 FM, and yes, using the equipment there! It’s been quite a lot of fun.

It all started at WAMU’s June Birthdays Celebration. Each month WAMU serves some kind of food to celebrate all the birthdays in that month. It was Strawberry Shortcake for June. Mmmm! The other Business Admin Associates and I were sitting around a table when we started talking about fitness, and how we all needed to lose weight. Some of us where in worse shape than others. Thankfully I had started walking on the treadmill from the moment I arrived back from college, so I was beginning to lose weight already. But there wasn’t much camaraderie in it.

So I suggested that we all, as a department, go to gym together after work on the three days we’re all in the office, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. To my surprise, the group loved the idea, and we started that very next week. together, as a group of accountants, we braved the world of the jocks, and muscle-clad, to achieve a fat-free existence!

Things were going really well, but during the 2nd week, people started dropping out, and skipping weeks (as I had partially expected). But a friend named Don Michael and I remained faithful. We were determined, and stuck it out faithfully.

This was unusual, because I have suffered with an overwhelming fear of the gym, and of athletics in general, or most of my life. It is mostly what we call “Fear of Man” and is directly related to my sinfully excessive concern with what people think about me. However, going with my nerdy little group of accountants has made all the difference. We’d talk of XGAR reports and XGEX Reports while doing our 30mins on the elliptical. We’d talk of recent problems while debiting the receivables, all while doing crunches. It was a very unusual time for others, I’m sure, but we had fun and enjoyed each other’s company all the while.

This was the way things rolled until last week, when Don Michael received an early birthday present from his dad. Apparently, his dad noticed his interest in getting in shape, and decided to give him a gym membership to a local sports and health club. (why you would pay for a gym, when you can use it for free at school, is unknown to me, but that’s what they did.) Don Michael no longer goes to the gym with us, leaving me with the two unreliable girls. One of the girls announced that she will be leaving the city, and WAMU. Which means, she won’t be going anymore, and the other only works on Mondays, so that’s only once per week, IF she decides to go. Which leaves me going all by myself, susceptible to the intimidation of the jocks!

But, my the Grace of God, I’ve been keeping it up on my own. And, I actually, really enjoy the exercise at the end of the day. It makes the hours sitting lazily at my desk accounting feel much less fattening! I’ve also lost 10lbs so far this summer, which is wonderful! I came home from college weighing 178.8 I’m now 168.4. That’s good for me! Lets go for ten more pounds! haha.

Until next time!

Here is a recent conversation with my dear Catholic Friend, Tage. I love talking with him about these things because he allows me to finish my thoughts, and frequently has insightful things to say.

Earlier in the day, Tage and I had stopped by a Borders looking at books, and one of those books that Tage was considering buy was written by a monk on the spiritual meaning on contemplation. I had scowled at what I read in the book because it seemed like a whole lot of pseudo-spiritual mush, lacking a firm biblical foundation. (admittedly, I only read the dust jacket). It sparked a discussion of whether I’m intolerant of Catholics, or unwilling to consider anything catholic as truth. Tage said I seemed dismissive of anything apart from Scripture. Which I may well be – I try and be discerning of what “theology” I ingest.

Based on that prior exchange, the following conversation occurred.

Tage:I’m reading Benedect’s encyclical on Christian hope

Tage: i know! i like these lines: That means: the Gospel is not merely a communication of things that can be known—it is one that makes things happen and is life-changing. The dark door of time, of the future, has been thrown open. The one who has hope lives differently; the one who hopes has been granted the gift of a new life.

http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/encyclicals/documents/hf_ben-xvi_enc_20071130_spe-salvi_en.html#_ftnref1

Sunday, May 25th marked 5 years of facility staff service for the church. The anniversary wasn’t marked by much of anything, and the date quietly slipped by unnoticed – which is good. However, it is fun to be and official “old-timer” on the facility staff, a veteran if you will. Good times!

College Republican Scholarship

Yesterday my friend Nick, whose frequent phone conversations are well documented in the previous post, called to tell me that he had won the first annual AU College Republican $5K Scholarship. He quoted the person who delivered the news to Nick as saying, “We gave you the scholarship because of your incredible letters of recommendation.” Now, letter of recommendation are always useful, but it just so happens that I wrote one of those letters, and while I should be happy that my eloquent prose achieve it’s desire effect in bringing Nick yet another scholarship, my sinful reaction was quite different.

(Jason and his sinning face… if only it were that easy to tell)

WHY IS IT THAT WHEN I STRUGGLE TO ACHIEVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, HE MANAGES STRIDE THROUGH LIFE UPON WAVE AFTER WAVE OF SUCCESS! WHY IS IT WHEN I LOSE TIME AFTER TIME, PRESIDENTIAL RACE AFTER CNN INTERNSHIP, AFTER NBC JOB, AFTER RISK GAME! WHY DOES HE HAVE SUCCESS AFTER SUCCESS, AND WIN WIN WIN!!! AND WHY DID I HELP HIM WITH MY DARN LETTER!!

These sinful emotions which are completely wrong basically boil down to 1 question, what am I doing wrong, that nothing works out for me? I’m Jobless, friendless, brainless, and generally speaking, less. I feel woefully inadequate for anything I attempt, and effectively prove it to myself and everyone else by losing each and every time. Perhaps there is merit to not even trying? It’s worked for 5 generations of Cunninghams before me.

Nick describes himself as follows: “College Freshman. Motivated, determined, passionate. Patriotic. Opinionated. Over-extended. Like to have a good time, love laughing. The beach is my favorite place. Picky. Adventurous. Hate wasting time. Italian. Enjoy the city. Big dreams, little patience.”

Of that list, we really only share a few points in common: like to have a good time, love laughing, and big dreams. Perhaps it is the rest of the list that I need to work on. Determined, passionate, adventurous. Those are adjectives that do not describe me.

So while I struggle to trust God for a summer job that isn’t materializing and a career that seems impossible at this rate of failure, I’m reminded of the countless scriptures that speak to God’s faithfulness, and while they don’t always help emotionally, a life ruled by emotions, like mine is presently, is a life not trusting in the certainty and solidity of God’s promise of eternal faithfulness. Why can’t I seem to take Him at his word. Ouff. As always, I remain a sinner in need of grace.

If you were interested, below is my letter of recommendation regarding Nick, the more I read it, the more I see problems with it, but also, the more I think it truly is a spectacular letter. Perhaps I could go into business? haha.

——————————————-~*~——————————————

April 15, 2008

To Whom It May Concern:

Scott Adams once wrote, “You don’t have to be a “person of influence” to be influential. In fact, the most influential people in my life are probably not even aware of the things they’ve taught me.” Nick Troiano is just such an influential person.

Over the last year I have had the opportunity to observe Nick as a Senator in our Student Government and have been extremely impressed by his whole-hearted stand for principle, rationality, and good judgment. As the most outspoken conservative thinker in the Senate, Nick has challenged the default assumption that liberal philosophies should be accepted and immediately implemented simply because they “sound good”. Nick has forced his colleagues to think about crucial issues and consider all the possible unintended consequences of blindly following the popular opinion.

The most prominent example of this is that of the hotly contested smoking bill, which would request the University establish a clear smoking policy on campus. Though faced with a hostile senate and passionate, outspoken opposition, Nick stayed true to his convictions risking the hatred of his peers to tirelessly shepherd the bill to both passage, and veto override. The bill was hotly contested because Nick dared to publicly suggest that a policy was needed, not simply a courtesy campaign. Nick may not be considered an influential person by some people, but his commitment to his ideals, and his willingness to work extremely hard to see those ideals realized, is truly an example to me, one that I am trying to apply even now.

I do not consider myself much of a manager; however, Nick has provided an indispensable example of a courageous political leader in the face of fierce opposition. He is also a leader who takes initiative to get things done. Last fall, Nick orchestrated a weekend trip down to South Carolina to campaign for Governor Huckabee. During our trip, Nick worked hard pursuing excellence in every task he was assigned. This commitment to excellence isn’t something many people would consider a hallmark of an influential person, however, it is one of the many traits that I admire most about Nick, and am seeking to improve in my own life.

In my three years at college, and the 18 years prior to that, I have been fortunate to see in my friends many admirable character traits which make them not only worth knowing and learning from, but also make them beneficial to society. Nick’s passion, commitment to excellence, and strong leadership skills serve as influential examples to me and many others. Of the few people whose careers I will be watching with great anticipation, Nick is undoubtedly at the top of the list. I consider it a privilege to count him as a colleague, but more importantly, as a friend.

 Jason J. Cunningham

——————————————-~*~——————————————
